Why “viceregal”? Well, there are those who point out that the Spaniards considered New Spain a kingdom, which ranks much higher than a mere colony. Whatever. The cities that flourished when the Iberians ruled Mexico, be they colonial or viceregal, are jewels to behold. I love them all.
